Wind damage to my home…

November 7, 2017

Wind damage is one of the most common peril that affects homeowners. Wind damage comes in several different forms. A fallen tree that hits your home is a form of wind damage. Missing roof shingles is a wind damage. As is missing siding.

For homeowners, wind damage can be a costly event. Especially if you are not clear on how to handle the placement of a claim.

Here are four things to keep in mind when experiencing any type of wind damage:

  • Wind damage usually leads to additional damage. When inspecting your damage, look both outside and inside of your home. The reason for carefully inspecting damage is that your policy requires that once you are made aware of damage, it is your responsibility to end the continuation of damage.  If you don’t, your insurance company may deny any claim you place.
  • When making these temporary repairs, make sure they are temporary. Don’t make a full repair until your insurance company has had time to review the damage. If you have roof damage due to wind, placing a tarp over the damaged area is considered a temporary solution.
  • If your home was struck by a tree, make sure to go throughout the home and open and close each window and door. Many times, the impact of a fallen tree can create a jolt to the home’s structure that affects the actual frame of the home. You want to be aware of any such damage before settling a home insurance claim.
  • How you detail the damage is very important. In order to get the highest possible settlement, it’s important that you details be in order. When the damage was caused? What peril caused the damage? What hidden damage is there? What materials need replacement? The current cost of materials? The current labor cost involved in order to bring the home back to pre-damaged condition?

Presenting a claim may be a bit more involved than most homeowners have the knowledge, time, or even ability to execute properly. It’s a mistake to expect the insurance company to provide help in this area. Insurance companies are looking to minimize claims payouts, not maximize them.
